CCM: Difference analysis of grain size and weight of different classified barley 09-27-2016

In order to improve the characteristics of barley grain, the researchers used one hundred and twenty-five barley as materials and divided them into three different classification based on phenotypic traits of row-type, hulled and hulless, and domestication level, then compared the differences of grain weight (GW), grain length (GL), grain width (GWid) and grain thickness (GT) among the classifications.Correlation analysis was performed among grain traits in this study.

The results show that:

  • The GW is related with row-type, but has no relations with the characters of hulled or hulless. The GW value of two-rowed barley (46.89 mg) is higher than that of six-rowed barley (35.71 mg)
  • The GL of hulled barley and two-rowed barley are respectively higher than that of hulless barley and six-rowed barley, and the wild barley has the longest GL of 13.19mm. Moreover, domestication and breeding can shorten the GL
  • The GWid value of two-rowed barley (3.55 mm) is higher than that of six-rowed barley (3.26 mm), and there is no significant difference in GWid between hulled and hulless barley
  • The variation of GT is similar with the trend of the GWid, and wild barley has the minimum GT of 1.69 mm

The correlation analysis shows that GW is significantly correlated with GWid and GT, and the relationship between GWid and GT is significant positive correlation.
